O encontro de culturas com ou sem escrita, histórica e geograficamente. O interface de tradições escritas e orais em sociedades que empregam a escrita em diversos níveis e contextos. O interface entre o uso da escrita e da fala na vida linguística de qualquer indivíduo.
O impacto do canal escrito nos sistemas culturais não foi, claro, o mesmo em todo o lado. Dependeu de circunstâncias sociais e variou com o tipo de sistema empregue para a representação visual da linguagem. Tais sistemas desenvolveram-se a partir de outras formas de representação visual ou dispositivos gráficos. Podem ser ordenados morfologicamente e de certa forma historicamente numa sequência de desenvolvimento com uma razoável precisão".
